Nestled about a mile back, Richard’s 54 acres of wild land are salt and peppered with airstream, silver stream and pathfinder trailers. He has been restoring these so folks like you and me can stay and enjoy the regions steeply sloped unspoiled dreamy wilderness. What else is great is that this place, which straddles the line somewhere between camping and motel, is that it’s off the grid. Richard lives on a steady diet of solar power, propane gas and farm fresh eggs…

Got up this morning and headed down to the pavilion for our usual breakfast snacks and to say goodbye to everyone. It always seems like on the first day that the last day of the rally is a while off, but on the last day it seems like the rally was over too fast! I talked to everyone and found out where and when we would see each other, some real soon and others will be a year from now.  Some people had a long distance to drive and headed out early, but many of us stuck around a talked for a while as we had very short distances to drive. I was surprised to find out even in my short 12 mile trip to Braden Castle there will be 4 other Tin Canners following me to the same park! So I will have great company while I stay in town and work, not to mention Forrest/Jerri Bone and Hunt/Sue Jones that live in Braden Castle….our own mini Rally!

Over all we had a great rally and met a lot of new members, 16 new members joined this rally! I am ver happy to see the TCT continue to grow with the economy the way it is. Next year our Winter Convention will be at Serotoma Youth Ranch which has much more room for us to grow since our Winter Convention has sold out the last three years!

March 19, 2011

Woke up early this morning, still had several last minute things to do inorder to get ready for the open house. Finished setting up by 745am and started to walk over to the pavilion for our breakfast snack. Met everyone else there and sat around for a while. After eating and talking for a while everyone headed back to their trailers to get ready for the show. This year the show was to start between 10am and noon, the local paper said noon, but other advertising said 10am. Worked out great becuase usually we are flooded with people who get there right we it opens, this way they came in a little more even flow. I started the show out by driving the judges around to judge the trailers, that didn’t take too long and after that I head back to my trailer to show it!

I had several people touring my trailer as usual, and met some great people. There were several that were very interested in vintage trailers and wanted to get involed with vintage camping!

There was one lady that came to tour my trailer and she was very happy to see my trailer as soon as she saw the exterior! She talked to me outside the trailer for a while and told me her connection to vintage trailers. She told me her late husband was in the navy and back in the 1950′s they bought a 1950 Spartanette just like mine. They towed the trailer from the west coast to the east coast many times everytime her husband was stationed at a different navey base. They also raised two children in the trailer. She never expected to see another Spartanette after all those year. After telling me her story and travels with the trailer she came inside the trailer to see the interior. When she stepped in she was overcome with memories and emotion from the past, as my trailer is completly original and back the way it was when new, including all the furnishings! By the time she made it back to the rear bedroom she was in tears, but not from sadness she was reminded of all the great times she had with her husband and raising their children in Spartanette they had!

I have had many people come through my trailer and they all say the remember a relative or they themselves lived in a trailer just like mine; most of them probably lived in another brand and just remember having a wood interior, I doubt many lived in a new Spartan as they were high priced when new.

There have only been a few that can remember for sure that they lived in a Spartan, just like the lady mentioned above. The strange part is I have had another lady at a previous show do the same thing!!!!! She was in her late 80′s and when she stepped inside my trailer she could not even speak, she just kept crying and smiling, she too had lived in a 1950 Spartanette Tandem just like mine, and traveled all over the US from 1950-1960 with her late husband.

After the show was over I made my way down to Danny and Gail’s trailer were John Culp and other Canners were sitting around (telling more lies!) So I sat around with them until around 5pm when it was time to head down to the pavilion for our cattered BBQ dinner! Dinner was great as always thanks to Perry’s BBQ Cattering. When dinner was over it was time for the results of the Winter Convention Trailer Show:  FIRST PLACE Doug Bachmen & Steve Allen with their 1974 Argosy, SECOND PLACE Charles & Judy Hilton with thier 1967 Avion Truck Camper, THIRD PLACE Woody & Dawn Wood with thier 1964 Airstream Bambi II, and SPECIAL INTREST Eddie Piddoch with his Custom Built Gypsy Wagon Bowtop.

Then it was time for the SHOW!!!! Alex and Charon Kingsington put on a great act including sword swallowing, fire breathing, block head act, and more!!!! Charon is the best sword swallower in the world, one of only a few female sword swollowers and the only one in the world to do the Heart Trick!!!! You will have to see it to understand!!!!!  I have seen the show many times and I now have more fun watching others reactions! Some just can’t take watching it, but at the same time they can’t stop watching!!!

After the show many headed back to pack up, but I headed back to Danny and Gail’s trailer where many people met to sit around the fire. We ended up staying out until around 1030 pm. I finally headed back to my trailer to start packing up a little, but I haven’t too far to go, I will only be going 12 miles to Bradon Castle park where Forrest Bone Lives. I have a trailer to work on here in Bradenton for a few days.

Can’t stay up any longer, been a very busy day!

 March 18, 2011

Woke up this morning to perfect sping like weather! Had birds singing, squirrels all over the place, and rabbits out in front of my trailer. The temperature was perfect, not hot nor cold. At 8am I walked over to the pavilion for our big Biscuit and Gravy breakfast, as usually the food was great……so was the company!

After breakfast there was an optional historical tour of a few places in Bradenton, but having gone to them in years past I decided to stay around the park and catch up on some work I brought with me, and to relax a little! By around lunch I made a store run for supplies and food, and my Yearly Trip to some of my favorite trailer parks in Bradenton to look at all the vintage trailers from the 40′s and 50′s. The trailers are park owned and rentals, most have been redone inside but the exteriors still have the vintage look. It is always fun to drive through and see them just sitting there, lost in time! I am very glad I live 450 miles away, other wise I might have more that the 5 vintage trailers I am up to now!!!!!!

After getting back from town I rode around on my bike and found a few other canners sitting out in front of Danny and Gail’s 62 Shasta. I joined in all the ‘lying’ and story telling for a few hours. Wasn’t long before it was time to get ready for the pot luck we were having this afternoon. After getting back to trailer and picking up my dish to take it was off to eat! There was more food than I have ever seen at one of our winter conventions! Lots of dessert too! Even after everyone had gone through once, and most twice, the food tables still looked full. After dinner we had sign ups for the Trailer Judging. I only had three trailers sign up so I got on my bike and went around to all the trailers and connived many more to enter, ended up with about 14 in all!

At 7pm tonight we had a gentleman provide us with great music from the 1950-60′s and more! The residents of Braden Castle came again this year to show off their dancing skills. The music lasted well into the night until around 9 pm! Then it was time for bed, we will have a very busy day tomorrow with the open house!

 March 17, 2011

This weekends time change has really messed up my sleeping, and to add to the change of time it is eastern time here so I am running about 2 hours behind mentally! Could not sleep good last night, plus my alarm did not go off this morning for some reason. I woke up at 10 am this morning!!!! After getting up I started to set my trailer up, I didn’t even level the trailer yesterday so I spent several hours cleaning and setting up my trailer. Today was the first official Rally day and there were trailers pulling in all day. Many trailers and attendees are here for the first time. Just after lunch I finally got my trailer all setup and made a trip to the store for supplies, and a new water hose, left mine at home.

When I got back to the park it was about 3pm, so I rode my bike around the park to see how many more trailers pulled in since I had been gone. After riding around it was time for everyone to meet for our social hour. I decided to take several of my vintage trailer topic magazines for everyone to look at, I had about 20 of them with me dating from 1939-1958. Everyone really enjoyed looking at the old ads and old trailer ads. Around 4pm it was time to welcome all the new members, we had 16 new members with a few more first timers arriving tomorrow! For dinner we had pizza and salad, and for dessert I brought a whole bunch of St. Patricks Day Cookies.

At 7pm we all gathered for a presentation provided by Hunt Jones on the history of the Auto tents throught the history of the modern hotel. It was a great presentation and very informative! After the prestentation everyone headed back to their trailers, several gathered around campfires at different sites and talked well into the night. I headed over to Danny & Gail’s ’63 Shasta were a few of us sat around the fire and talked for a while. Wasn’t long before it was time for bed!

Since it is St. Patricks  Day, here is an Irish Travel Quote:

“May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been,
The foresight to know where you are going,
And the insight to know when you have gone too far”
