There was a hint of concern about the weather as we left Reno. The lady at the park office gave us a couple of phone numbers we could use to inquire about road conditions. It was 28 when we left and there were snow showers as we packed up and hit the road. As we made our assent we kept registering temps of between 28-32. Cloudy and a bit of wind, but every once in a while you could see a clearing with a patch of blue. We just had to make the summit and blue skies and sunny conditions would be our reward. We had set the GPS to take us to Auburn, California. I took a look at Map Quest via the computer the night before and it wanted to take us via a state road route. With the weather the way it was we choose to stay on I 80. After reaching Auburn we put Coloma Resort into the GPS and followed its direction for 16 or so miles to the resort. The route was similar to the road to Virginia City. Very windy and some ups and downs. A lot of the curves had 20 mph limits.
We made the top and now the California sun is shining down on us.
We reached the Campground around 11 and were happy to find out that the spot we have today will be where we will stay until we depart. Coloma Resort is a outdoor education facility and they have children here from Monday through early Friday for educational activities. Their area has motel like accommodations, outdoor kitchen, outdoor amphitheater, a rope course, and organic gardening area. The Resort uses a tent cabin village similar to those at Camp Dearborn. Each tent contains enough bunks to sleep at least six. The Resort filled up fast for the weekend with a few families opting for the tents.
This weekend is Coloma Gold Rush Live . There is a live history tent encampment that recreates the California Gold Rush. We will go down tomorrow for the live history and the tales of the Gold Rush discovery at Sutter’s Mill. A quick trip over a one lane bridge and we will be at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park.
We will all have sites on the river for the California Regional Gathering.
This picture was taken a few steps down from out site.
This area and an extended area behind the camera are the river sites we will have for the Gathering.
There is a fire ring and a covered picnic table at each site.
You will probably get this sometime on Saturday. I am typing it on Friday, but am not getting a cell signal to upload it. Will try on Saturday.
Hope everyone had a great week. Hope the weather has been as good as we have had for our travels this past eleven days.
