Shuffling Off

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After 25 years with TCT, I now find myself shuffling instead of walking, my two canes gripped in either hand.  For decades, knee parts have been on order from NAPA and other parts houses but yet to arrive and probably unaffordable now with import tariffs.  The rig is in far better condition.  Joining TCT in 2001 and knowing Forrest Bone from the Vintage Airstream Club, I found my name on the back of a slick color tri-fold club application as “US Representative.”  I called Forrest and asked, “What’s this?”  He replied, “I don’t know.  Make something up.” I did.  The title, structure of Representatives and responsibilities have since changed several times, some now to “Ambassador,” but the interest and dedication to support Tin Can Tourists never waned.  Along the way, the conventions, the historic road caravans, my series of ten “roadside” presentations, insurance research, meeting members regardless of official Happy Hours (why wait?), and promoting interest for all RV’s have all made for a life-changing experience.

The dedication of Forrest and Jeri, Terry and Michelle Bone, my friend Tim Heintz as future Director/Royal Can Opener, plus all of you regardless of title or responsibilities is an on-going assurance that TCT will continue its unique success.

“Your friends are my friends…”

  1. Hunt-we see the picture of your rig (as seen above) hanging above the registration desk in the office of Jersey Shore Haven (Airstream) campground in NJ. Beyond that, folks there tell the story of your meticulously polished vintage Airstream and your mechanically perfect truck. I also remember reading about how you fine tuned your set up in an old 2008 issue of Airstream Life. Your influence on the hobby and lifestyle precede you. Best wishes for the continued travels you, hopefully, will be blessed with.

  2. Enjoyed knowing you through TCT, your knowledge, and helpful advice.

  5. Dear Hunt and Susan,
You enriched Astrid and my camping experience greatly when we joined TCT 12 years ago. What cherished memories we have of our early days! 6. Great hearing from you Hunt, although I’m sorry to hear your knees are giving you such trouble. We have happy memories of touring with you and Sue, of listening and watching your fantastic presentations. The more we get together, the happier we will be.

  7. I love your message. Bob and I were fortunate to join back when everybody was in relatively good shape. Wonderful memories and good friends gained.
Your historic camping/related slide shows taught us so much….. and your dry humor made it even more entertaining. TCT friends forever!

  8. Thank you for this.
We thoroughly loved meeting you & Susan.
I believe we were neighbours at Sertoma Youth Ranch one Winter.
We had a blast playing tag with you along the Lincoln Highway. Thank you for the history of the Moose.
Cant forget the times at Camp Dearborn, especially dancing in the tent with Susan.
Seeing you at Braden Castle & you & Susan showing us your beautiful home was amazing.

  10. TCT was our Second club association but always a pleasure to attend and meet folks like we did at this years 2025 Winter Convention! Hunt and Sue were always on our minds as we traveled with our Airstream throughout the the last 25 years. Thanks for the friendship and memories!

  11. Always enjoyed interacting with you. Had a great time on the Lincoln Hwy Caravan. You have been a great service to TCT and all of us. Loved that you were “towing old with old”. Loved your inquisitive mind and search for our history. Toasting to you right now!

Thank you both for all you have contributed through the years! You have left your mark on many hearts and certainly in the memories of all who have been lucky enough to join you on your journey! There is no way to contemplate Tin Can Tourist without including your wonderful presentations! I personally, happy to say, think of you when I gather up my collection of TCT t-shirts and treasured denim shirts!
Thanks for the memories – ‘happy to be together’

  14. Hunt, my first TCT rally we were all a twitter but fish out of water. We didn’t attend your presentation and have regretted it and never missed another! You and Susan gave of yourselves and I understand you now have to give to yourselves! Thank you! I hope you are still enjoying the table!

  17. Hunt and Susan, you were indispensable in getting the Northeast rally established and keeping it running. Hunt’s yearly presentations were informative, entertaining and educational. The research and effort put into each one made them something that I looked forward to every year. I can never thank them enough for their support and above all, their friendship. See you both down the road…

  18. enjoyed your presentations. had a lot of great times with tct. the silver streak and c10 have bin sitting since covid. judy passed in feb. sorry to hear you are slowing down. Lincoln hwy. was one of the best trips for us. thank you for all you have done for tct to make it a great club.

  19. Hunt – It was an honor to meet you at JSH, I’m still out on the Rally Field hoping to see you again someday. You are the Best Airstream Inspiration for me so far! I will always be working on something as you said & I always keep the Shiny Side Up! Thank you for all of your wise words – I listened! Best of everything to you & Sue – Healing, Living in this thing called Life we have. Only Love. Thank You so Much Hunt!

  20. Hunt and Sue,
It was enjoyable to see your energy and enthusiasm when I attended the winter conventions. Thank you, Sue, for always helping where needed with planning events, meals and entertainment acts. Thank you, Hunt, for your informative presentations. I appreciate all of the time, expense and effort that you both put into those. That is dedication to history.
Hopefully, those parts from NAPA will arrive sooner rather than later so that you can give up shuffling and 2 canes.

  21. Hunt and Susan were amazing during Ed’s
stint as the Northeast Rep. They helped us navigate our early rallies. I think of Susan every time I use the symbolic muffin tin she gifted me to make chili competition tasting easier. Ethan was 4 when we first started attending rallies. He was excited when at the age of 18 he finally got a laugh from Hunt. He knew he wasn’t a “kid” anymore. The presentations were always amazing. Hunt and TCT will always be intertwined in my mind. The level of shine on his rig will never be matched.
