Sarasota Symphony started as a Tin Can Tourists trailer park band?

Over the years, Payne Park has provided a home for various commercial or private pursuits, from Major League spring training games to mobile home residents in need of cheap housing. And according to Mary Tolley, former historian for the Suncoast Concert Band, this organization had its roots in the “Tin Can Tourists” who followed the ball players to Florida.

“Eight Sarasota Trailer Park residents who had musical backgrounds decided to start a band on Jan. 17, 1933,” she writes. “The band grew and had outdoor concerts at Payne Park and other venues. The name of the band was Sarasota Trailer Park Band.”
