New Member Interview with T.R. & Lisa Mahaffey

Can you tell us about how you got into the vintage trailer hobby?

We have been camping for a while now but are new to vintage camping. We started with a 24′ toy hauler and then moved to a 29′ bumper pull. While wanting to downsize and looking at smaller campers we kind of stumbled into the vintage campers. My wife’s sister bought a ’74 Coachman and while camping with her we fell for the vintage style.

What type of trailers have you owned and what do you have now? What is your dream vintage trailer?

We just got our ’78 Shasta 1700.  We have been told the previous owners rescued it from a Christmas tree farm where it served as an office space.  They redid the walls, insulation and electric.  We intend to paint, add more storage, add our own touches and bring it a little closer to original over the winter.

What do you tow with?

We tow with a 2018 GMC Sierra but would love to eventually find something vintage to tow with.

Do you attend rallies and what do you like the most about attending a rally?

We have never attended a vintage rally but would be very interested in attending- how fun!

Why did you decide to join the Tin Can Tourists?

I joined Tin Can Tourists to have access to like-minded campers and to have available resources for information, ideas and parts location.

What are your camping plans for this year?

We typically camp one long weekend a month from April to October, with a couple extended stays in August and September.
