Tin Can Tourists member Jack Bol sent us this PDF filled with interesting tidbits from the early 1900s regarding Auto Camping in Colorado. Two items we hadn’t heard about.
- Tin Can Tourists Division started in Colorado Springs in 1921 (page 5)
- Tin Can Schools Debated – “The first ‘tin can’ school is reported from Florida. It is attended by children of the ‘tin can’ tourists.” (page 9)
Greetings from the Mile High City,
I’ve been interested in Colorado’s tourist/travel history for many years. For me, the research and interesting facts are what makes this fun.
I’ve attached a copy of a narrative I put together regarding Colorado’s early auto tourist. Thought you might enjoy it.

Interesting. The Automobile Tourist Association came about in the early ‘30s as a break away splinter of TCT. Here a Automobile Tourist Drivers Association is cited but seems to be from an earlier period, love to learn more about them. So interesting that there was a pretty early Colorado chapter of TCT. Good stuff.
Interesting and great to see:
The charge of 50 cents per
car per night has eliminated almost entirely
the undesirable “tin can” tourist of a few
seasons ago who was looking for a free
place to atop.

and following the next article about Tin Can Students 🙂
GREAT TO SEE THIS:
that some auto tourist camps in various parts
of the state where seeking to build up their
popularity by hanging out “For White
People Only” signs. Every sign of this
character is a disgrace to civilization, an
insult to decent Americans and a shameful
violation of our state law. A lesson should
and no doubt will be taught some of these
narrow, overzealous owners of such camps
if this practice is indulged in during the
present tourist season.
