New Member Interview with Sandy and Ed Emerick

Sandy & Ed Emerick, we are from Brussels Wisconsin which is in southern Door Peninsula. We have been vintage trailer owners since 1996 when a very wet tent camping trip caused us to rethink our vacation plans. At the time we had two young daughters and enjoyed camping but didn’t like all the set up and take down of two tents and a screened in room along with the 1,110 pounds of other gear we would take. On the way home Sandy said to me ‘When we retire, we should buy an old Airstream and restore it”, and I said why wait. We put an ad in the local newspapers “Wanted Used Airstream” and we found our first, a 1961 24-foot Airstream Tradewind.

We have now owned and restored 6 Airstreams over the years and now own just three, 1959 18 foot Traveler, 1968 30 foot Sovereign and our 1987 31 foot Excella. We travel with the 1987 most of the time but do use the other two at times. We tow with a 2018 Toyota Tundra but also own a 1975 International Travelall that has seen a trip or two around Wisconsin pulling one of the trailers. The 1987 Excella is a wonderful unit to travel with, it has plenty of room for us and the dog and cat, has enough modern conveniences to make it comfortable and the classic Airstream name.

We have been very active in the Airstream Club,  the Vintage Airstream Club and have been members of TCT on and off for the past 25 years. We enjoy rallies of all types and have used them to see much of the country. We also have made many friends over the years and seeing them at a rally is the best part of all. Now that we are retired we hope to be able to attend more events especially those offered by TCT, attending these types of event on a regular basis is what we had always hoped for in retirement.

In 2022 we are hoping to attend the TCT event in Dearborn and we are still debating on which trailer to bring, but we have all winter to figure that out. We have a ton of places we want to see in the Wisconsin area that will take up most of the summer and will finish out the travel season in the fall with a trip around Lake Superior.

Sandy and I look forward to meeting all of you this spring, this is an event that we have wanted to attend for some time. Until then, we hope to see you down the road.
